His eyes glanced over the abandoned arena. No one had the guts to come out on a day like this. The air was frozen stiff, making everything seem miserable and tired. Tanner pulled his flight jacket closer to his small frame, a shiver running up his spine. He felt sorry for the horses for some reason. Even though they were in an inclosed stable with blankets and winter pelts. It still made him feel guilty to be in a heated dorm and them be outside in the icy wilderness. Horse heads poked out of the top of their stable doors, giving friendly nickers to him as he passed. He tossed his dark locks from his eyes, staring at each curious head for a few moments. He stopped at the sight of a black and white gypsy vanner. She was a looker. Probably a dressage mare. He stepped up to the stall door, reaching his pale hand out to touch her nose. The mare lipped his hand for a moment, her eyes begging for attention. Tanner reached forward a bit more, running his numb fingers along her muscular neck. She tossed her head a bit before he stepped away from the stall and looked at her for a moment.
Tanner had a strange way of thinking about animals. He wanted so badly for them to all be free of humanity, then again he didn't know if he could live without the presence of a horse or dog. He had the idea that they spoke. Spoke through their eyes and the way they were raised. Each and every horse here had a history...good or bad. He reached his hand up to touch his lip. It was almost time for the stitches to come out of his forehead, lip and side of his face. Finally. He was tired of strange looks from passerbys. A sigh parted from his lips. He missed his girlfriend dearly. With all the school he'd been doing, he'd found that there was no time to just 'hangout' anymore. Even though it had only been a week, he really...really missed her. He shoved the thoughts from his mind, knowing that he'd just get all emotional right in front of these horses. You think I'm weird don't you? He questioned the mare who just stood, tilting her head at his unfamiliar words. Yeah, I know I should be studying, but I need a freakin' break! He spoke quietly. Tanner loved talking to animals. It made him feel like there was always someone listening. He wondered who this gypsy vanner belonged to. You should meet my girlfriend. You're almost as pretty as her. But sorry, she's like beautiful amazingness. He whispered as if he was telling the horse a secret. The horse snorted as if she were laughing. He chuckled and smiled.

Alex awoke with a jump. For a moment she was confused and cold. Why was she in the stall? Why did her neck hurt? Then in one big shot it all came back. The long terrifying night. Turning sharply she let out a yelp as she struggled to her feet trying to see the gelding that lay beside her. It looked as though his fever had broken; and felt that way. Her back was drenched in sweat from laying against him all night.
Finally managing a kneeling position she stroked the large Frisians head. He just looked at her out of the corner of his eye. "Hey boy. How you doing this morning? I hope I didn't keep you up all night", she murmured to the horse.Even though he was sweating his pelt felt as cold as ice. Alex ran to the door and pulled off his blanket which she had taken off the previous night. She coaxed him to a standing position gently and pulled the blanket over him.
Giving the horse one last look she exited the stall to find a phone to call the vet. Once she had latched the door she turned and jumped. Yelping once again and rubbing her neck she stuttered "Sorry, didn't hear you come in." She smiled wearily and reached for the phone hanging on the end stall. She let the phone ring a couple times before leaving a message. She walked back to the stall and leaned on the door and closed her eyes when a soft muzzle touched the back of her head. She smiled and reached up above her head without opening her eyes. It was like he was telling her that he would be OK.

Tanner also took this new presence by surprise. OhLORD. He murmured in complete surprise. Did this girl seirously just spend the night in the stall? He chuckled lightly to himself and smirked at her. Thats fine. Is your horse ok? He asked the obvious question. A shiver ran up his spine, making his stutter his words. He leaned against the stall door, thinking about how horrid to look to meet new people. A face full of stitches. Tanner looked at the large black horse that was nuzzling it's owner. He wanted to say something, but he wasn't really sure what to say. He didn't make any effort to leave. He wanted to be in the stables as well as she did.

She smiled at his question. "I think he'll be fine for another few hours. He had a huge fever last night and I was here late and I guess I just fell asleep and..." Her voice trailed off as the terrior she had experienced last night not knowing if her beloved friend would make it through the night came washing back over her. She faught the tears that bagan to escape. Covering up the drops on her cheek she pretented to brusha stray peice of hair from her face and bussied herself with some random task, trying to hide the sobs escaping from her mouth. Regaining her composure she turned to face him and held out her hand. "Hi, I'm Alex. I didn't mean to interupt." She motioned to the gypsy that now looked slightly confused and trying to get his attention again.

Tanner felt a lot of sympathy for this girl. Losing a horse would be like losing...a parent. He really couldn't imagine the pain. He'd never owned a horse, but he could ride like a pro, always riding his trainer and friend's horses. He'd lost a parakeet once, but he was pretty sure the mourning was quite different. He rolled his eyes at his own pathetic thoughts. As she introduced herself, he smiled lightly, nodding. I'm Tanner....and trust me, you weren't interupting anything. He said with a chuckle. He glanced at the Gypsy Vanner again. She looked as if she was making fun of him. Ha. That wasn't a hard think to do. He flipped his long hair from his eyes another time, revealing 17 stitches in his forehead. He was incredibly sick of his zombie-like look and he was ready to pierce his face again. You been at HU long? He said simply, trying to start a conversation to get their minds off the chill coming through the gaps in the barn.

Once again trying to subdue her sobs, she attempted an answer but it came out in squeak. She tried again "No, I just got here a few weeks ago. I transfered from Italy. I guess I just needed to get away from life there." A cold breeze flew in through the barn doors."Do you mind if I shut this?" she asked gesturing to the open door. When another cold gust blew in she didn't wait for a reply but went to shut it. On her way back she looked in the stall the held the gelding. "This is Baron. I've had him since he was born. Trained him myself. I even have the scars and x-rays to prove it." She chuckled and shook her head slightly at what had been of her wild colt.

[fm0amf. I WANT TO MEET ALEX. so I'm posting.]
"Idiiiittaaaroddd..." the horse's name was sung, a sugar sweet voice calling out for the mare with an insane amount of affection. Tanner had probably gathered that was the Gypsy Vanner's name, as the horse was sure to respond in some fashion, she always did. Sure enough, Avery came gallavanting around the corner to greet the mare she had stabled at HU, fussing with a bareback pad in her hands and mumbling things to it. At this point, she probably looked slightly crazy, talking to an inatimate object, but everyone did, didn't they? As Avery's eyes finally wandered up, seeing two people - Tanner, and a girl she didn't know yet, but just gathered was stunningly pretty - her face was instantly flooded with a sheet of red. "I'm. Oh, sorry, I'll.." it didn't matter if that was her boyfriend standing over there, she didn't want to ruin the chance of him gaining a new buddy around town. Avery was practically the only one he truly knew around here, and he deserved some time without her constantly clinging to him, even though she'd been missing him this entire past week. Rushing behind Tanner - though not without running a few freezing fingers across his back as she wandered past, light as a feather - and handing the gypsy mare a carrot, whispering a few words to her horse, Avery gave a tiny wave, throwing in a beaming smile. Then, she was making her way towards the stable doors, just managing to trip on a rise in the stable floor.

Alex turned at the sight of a new set of foot steps. Her heart skipped a beat when the new girl looked at her. She didn't want anyone to see her like this; all red eyed and frightened. It just wasn't her. She was usually so strong and completely business like. But then she reminded herself not to be to hard on herself.
She walked over to where the phone was and tried the vet again, just for something else to do than just stand there. Once again she winced as she reached up for the phone, having to stand on her tippy toes. She quickly dialed the vets number and jumped when his voice answered over the whole. "Hi, Dr.Veek, this is Alex. I was just calling to say that the fever broke last night. I was wondering what else I could do." She was gripping the phone so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. Nodding a few more times into the phone she hung up and sighed. Now it was time to wait.
Remembering she had a change of warm clothes in her locker in the tack room, she headed to change into something dry and warm. As she did she saw the new girl brush Tanner's back. Oops. She hoped that she hadn't intruded on something personal.

He watched both the girls twitter around like they were interupting something. He half smiled and rolled his eyes lightly. Women. Neither of them were causing him to be nervous or interupted in any way. He wasn't sure why they were acting so strange. Though he was incredibly happy to see Avery. Don't be sorry, baby. He whispered, raising a brow. Nice to meet you, Alex. He said, giving her a warm smile. That your horse, Av? He said, feeling slightly embarrased. Heh..Shes a good one to have a conversation with. Tanner spoke with a chuckle. Tanner looked at Alex for a moment. She probably though he was crazy. He knew Avery thought he was half brained.

Avery absentmindedly shook her head at Tanner, thoughts clearly elsewhere. A look of slight pity, though she was attempting to disguise it as simply being tired, was present, her mouth pulled down in a frown. "Is she OK?" Avery whispered, leaning towards him in an attempt to keep her uneasy question between them and them only. She would've generally introduced herself, but the girl had rushed off into the tack room, only troubling Avery more. "Uh, yeah, she's mine. Iditarod," she was returning to the question she'd originally skipped over, her thoughts a jumble right now. Part of that was due to how freezing she was, trembling slightly beside him, though she wasn't going to neglect visiting her horses just because she was cold.

Her horse was ill last night. He told Avery softly, staring at her face for a few short moments before pulling her to his chest in a warm embrace. I've missed you... He whispered, holding her incredibly close. To close, maybe. He loosened his grip, thinking that maybe he was choking her. A smile crept over Tanner's pale face. Suddenly, a shrill, repetative beeping emitted from his back pocket. His phone alarm. He pulled out the old, beat up flip phone and looked at it. Time for class. He mumbled, annoyed. He already had to leave and he'd spent maybe 2 minutes with Avery. A sigh parted from his lips as he pulled away from her. I've got to go. He stated the obvious.

Well. At least she'd seen him and touched him, though it was hard to view that as being good enough. "Oh. OK," her voice disclosed unmistakeable sadness, staring up at his face with a weak smile. "Don't look too much at all those pretty girls for me, okay?" her muffled laugh only made the situation worse, the knowledge that they both did not want to leave eachother's sight - yet knowing they had to - being the worst kind of punishment you could come up with. She glanced in the direction of the tack room, praying that they weren't being spied upon as she stood on her tiptoes, a vigorous kiss placed on his lips. Now, her smile was completely genuine, though her eyes were no longer alight as they had been when she'd first arrived. This was probably the last kiss for what, a week? That was horrible. "Have fun," she sighed, streaming hastily into the tack room in a search for Alex. She wanted to make sure the girl was OK, and not traumatized or something, though she had already been speaking to Tanner.

He hated to disappoint her like this. But what else could he do? Skip class? No, no, he didn't think so. A frown creased his mouth as she kissed him. what other pretty girls... he mumbled. She was the only pretty girl he saw. With one last glance, he drifted out of the stable, jogging towards the dorms. He'd call her later and talk for at least 4 hours. No...No, she'd come to him dorm. For once, he smiled at a new idea.

(OOC: So sorry it took so long to post.
As she entered the tack room she looked around and tried to steady her breathing. This was going to be another long night alone, in the cold, worried half to death. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and let it out. Doing this several times seemed to clear her head.
Reaching for the purple bucket that was already filled with the sweat smelling oats, she added the simple remedy that her mother had taught her.Once it was mixed to a watery substance, she returned to the stall and dumped it in. The sight of her sickly horse looking up, but staying laid down made the tears come back again. Wow, she had never cried this much in one day and she was so embarrassed. But thinking no one was left she let it out.
